Chairman Mao Memorial Hall: A Hall in Memory


It’s an intriguing tourist attraction in Beijing which holds immense historic significance. It is also known as the Mao Mausoleum or the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong since it is the resting place of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China.

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is a large monument and important Chinese landmark which boasts a total land area of 57000 square meters. It is an impressive square shaped structure which is 33.6 meters in height and is excellently positioned in the south of Tianmen Square in the capital city of China. From the north hall to the main gate, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall has enough room for even more than 700 people.

It was Chairman Mao’s wish to be cremated; however the body of this Chinese legend was preserved and a mausoleum was built in order to keep the memories alive. Following Mao Zedong’s demise in 1976, the Chinese built this memorial hall which completed construction in May 1977. It is said that people and material throughout China helped to design and construct the mausoleum.

Chairman Mao is also known as the Great Helmsman. His remains are kept in a special place called the Hall of Mourning which is the main feature of Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. The crystal coffin is placed in the very heart of the hall which is opened for public viewing. The coffin is covered with a big red flag of the Chinese Communist Party. At present 10 halls at the mausoleum are open to the public.

Yet another notable feature is the three-meter-high sitting statue of Chairman Mao. In the west and the east halls visitors can view the success stories of national heroes like Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Liu Shaoqi.
