Summer Palace – Beijing’s Royal Garden

The Summer Palace is a palace located in the Haidian District of Beijing, China, roughly fifteen kilometres from the city centre. Its Chinese name literally means ‘Gardens of Nurtured Harmony’. Much of the three hundred hectare complex is taken up by Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill (Wanshou Shan). It is the largest and best preserved royal park in the country and is among the nation’s most popular tourist attractions. It was built in 1750 as a place where royals could relax and would serve as the royal residence during the latter part of the Qing Dynasty.

The Summer Palace is a gorgeous example of a traditional Chinese garden. Structures such as pavilions, bridges, palaces, halls and temples have been built to complement and enhance the natural landscape. Although much of it was destroyed during the Second Opium War (1856 to 1860), it was restored and expanded under the reign of Emperor Qinglong of the Qing Dynasty. In 1924 it was declared a public park and has since remained popular among locals and tourists alike. The Summer Palace was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The attraction is readily accessible by public transport. Admission is about CNY 20.

These include historic sites such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, as well as more modern sites such as the Olympic Water Park and the National Stadium (nicknamed the ‘Bird’s Nest’). The roads in Beijing are concentric rectangles which should make the city easy to navigate. However, the presence of a number of side streets and by-lanes make the task tougher on visitors.
