The Green Dragon temple was established in 528AD under the name Linggan Temple, and changed its name to Green Dragon (Qinglong) Temple in 711AD. The sacred Green Dragon temple is considered to the ancestor temple of the Tantra sect of Japanese Buddhism, as it was famous in the early 9th century when large quantities of Japanese monks were sent to China to study Buddhism. The Green Dragon temple was destroyed in the Song Dynasty, and was reconstructed in the 20th century.
