Beijing Chrysanthemum Exhibition: Adding Colour in Autumn

In many countries, the blooming of the beautiful chrysanthemum flowers is a pleasant reminder that autumn is upon them. In other countries, it is of a greater significance. In Australia, for an instance, the flowers are given on mother’s day whilst it is often also known as the flower of November. Often known as mums or chrysanths, these beautiful flowers are native to Asia and Europe and bloom in a spoon, quill and spider like shapes in a myriad of colours.

For the Republic of China, chrysanths are said to be a symbol of nobility and is one of the Four Gentleman of China. In addition, there a large number of poems written about these flowers all around the country and is especially significant during the Double Ninth Festival, a Chinese Festival deeply rooted in Chinese culture for warding off evil and epidemics and incidentally, chrysanthemums are said to ward off evil as well and bloom around this time in abundance.

With the arrival of the month of September, the streets of Beijing take on a tinge of brown as the city prepares for autumn. However, the blooming of these flowers adds natural colour to the city like never before.

Chrysanths are also the flower of the city of Beijing and these flowers can be found all year around, in small potted plants, all around the city making it a very pleasant and beautiful sight. They create a rainbow of colours blooming in shades of pink, yellow, purple and magenta. Given the great importance the city gives to chrysanthemums, it is then no surprise that they celebrate these flowers with energy at the Beijing Chrysanthemum Exhibition in the parks of the city.

If you are in the city around the time the festival takes place, it is absolutely essential that you visit and drink in the euphoria that these beautiful blooms create. The most well known exhibition can be found in Beihai Park which has featured these flowers over 20 times. This exhibition not only features the flowers but also hosts an art exhibition as well as a number of fun contests. There is also a special area allocated especially for bonsai and flower arrangements consisting of chrysanthemums.

Tiananmen Square: A square with a history that is not so fair

Located in the centre of Beijing, the square is just separated from the Forbidden City with the Tiananmen gate and is a must visit tourist site for visitors to China. Many Chinese citizens visit the city to take snap shots of themselves with the portrait of Chariman Mao. The square is vast, with paved stones stretching over seemingly endless stretch of space and is claimed to be able to hold one million people. In spite of the heavy security that almost rises to the level of that at airports, the atmosphere is congenial, relaxing and one can even enjoy a kite flying sessions if the weather and conditions permit.

The Tiananmen tower lies to the north end of the square and in the olden days, has been the place to throne the emperor and was limited to the visits of royalty. Enclosed in two rows of clear white marble railings in the centre of the square with eight large relic sculptures lies the largest monument known to China’s history. This granite monument dedicated to the People’s heroes was created in 1952 with the famous words of Chairman Mao scribbled on the monument ‘ People’s Heroes are Immortal’. The southern end of the square holds the Memorial hall of Chairman Mao himself, which contains his body in a crystal coffin and is regularly surrounded by garlands and wreaths of flowers.

The great hall of the people is an impressive building in the square with twelve marble posts in front in a protective stance while the central hall which is the foremost part of the three segments of the hall has marbled floors and crystal lamps hanging from its ceilings to add lustre and festivity to its exterior. The auditorium behind that can contain 10,000 while the banquet hall next to that can hold about 5000 people.

When it comes to serving people, there’s no place quite like the Raffles Beijing Hotel that can serve its visitors to a memorable stay like nowhere else.
