Prince Gong’s Mansion – Showcasing Ancient Chinese Architecture

A princely Qing Dynasty mansion in Beijing, Prince Gong’s Mansion is a great example of ancient Chinese architecture. Situated near Shichahai Lake, to the northwest of the Forbidden City, this mansion with great aesthetic value and cultural connotations, is regarded as an asset to all those who are interested in studying the lifestyle of the bygone eras’ privileged classes. Built in 1777, it is one of the most well preserved mansions in the city.

The main gate is guarded by two stone lions while at the front of the mansion are magnificent buildings and at the rear, an elegant garden. The calligraphy of Emperor Xianfeng can be seen on the plaque which is hung on the main hall’s wall.

Having served as the original residence of Heshen, who was an intelligent and handsome member of the imperial guard, the mansion was however passed to Prince Qing later on. This traditional courtyard mansion sprawls across 60,000 sq.m. Whilst the residential portion covers more than half of its area, the remainder includes the ornamental garden.  Three smaller courtyards are contained in both the eastern and western sections. These exquisite and grand buildings stand as poignant reminders of the splendour and pageantry that was very much part of the country’s imperial past.
The site’s garden has a distinctive design and layout featuring pavilions, caves, ponds and mountain peaks. Popularly known as ‘Three Uniqueness in the Prince Gong’s Mansion’ are the ‘fu’ Stele, the ‘Grand Theater House’ and the ‘Western-Style Gate’ in the garden. The garden is at times called ‘fairyland of the world’ and ‘pearl of Shicha Lake’.

Visit this magnificent site to marvel at its courtyards, winding corridors and pavilions, colourful flowers, pond, piling rockworks and other interesting features. Besides these, there are also other fascinating sightseeing spots including Yaoyue Platform, Dule Peak, Anshan Hall and Liubei Kiosk.
