When exploring the Chinese capital’s cultural landmarks there’s no attraction that inspires as much controversy and popularity quite like Tiananmen Square. Having been the backdrop for many a historical event of global significance, the largest city square in the world is perhaps best known for the 1989 pro-democracy protests and its aftermath. Named after its northern entrance, Tiananmen Gate, this sprawling city square is located in the heart of the Chinese capital adjacent to the equally eminent Forbidden City.
Spread out over 440,000m2 the massive compound is frequently occupied by kite flyers, locals and visitors during most of the year, while fresh flowers are known to invade the environs during holiday seasons. Points of interest within the square include the historic Tiananmen Tower, which was constructed in 1417 during the reign of the Ming Dynasty. Its northernmost end, the tower was once used for state ceremonies and royal decrees such as the declaration of an emperor or empress. Barred to the public till 1911, the tower was exclusively used by the royal family and high profile noblemen in society.
The Monument to the People’s Heroes is situated at the heart of the square and is the largest tribute of its nature in Chinese history. Constructed in 1952, the chairman Mao, the inscribed monument at the site features 8 statuettes with two white marble railings enclosing the sculptures.
Another highlight is of course the Great Hall of the People where the China National People’s Congress conferences and other political affairs are conducted. Divided in to the Great Auditorium, Banquet Hall and Central Hall the venue features rich interiors complete with crystal chandeliers and marble floors.
The Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao occupies the southern end of the enclave and houses three halls, one of which contains the remains of China’s most influential leader. The China National Museum on the eastern corner of the square is also worth the visit as this illustrious institution documents the evolution of this great nation across the ages with books, models, relics and other engaging exhibits.
